Thanks for the information – I was wondering more about the details… numbers, Taking into account the number of pages that my website has and the time that it has been up…. Is the site where it is supposed to be as far as ranking? will it take time? more pages to get higher ranking? (of course besides more effort)

A good summary, Rich.

I believe what Google is doing is very anti-competitive and I am not sure how it is possible they got away with it at the antitrust hearing in September.

However, I do not agree that much with one thing in the article. It is not a battle of big/small among the IYPs, rather than a battle of good content vs. bad content. Most of the directories whose rankings/visitors rose have great, top quality content (think Zagat) and, yes, generally the smaller-size directories have either no or very small amount of useful, unique content.

Whatever anyone says, content is still the king.

Thank you for a concise overview of local search, useful for those with experience and others who have an understandable curiosity about the topic. Local companies that have invested in this area, will surely see a nice ROI, if using industry accepted methods and practices.

Really interesting stuff. It seems only reasonable that more real estate will lead to a higher conversion rate.

But should the AdWords account include both brand keywords and non-brand keywords? From the sound of it, I think so.

"few of these SEO services I’m hearing within the local-space really address all the critical SEO factors (on-page factors, inbound links, social, listings, ratings/reviews, etc.). High organic rank and visibility is a product of multiple efforts and hard work – don’t’ get fooled by anything less."

I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought and worked like this. Thank you for reiterating what I've been saying all along.
